Information for Nantyr students on their Return to School

Dear Nantyr families,

We are so happy to have everyone coming back to school.  However, it will be very different then what we are used to.  I would like to share some of the new safety precautions and rules to help keep you safe

  • The entrance doors will be the front doors and the side doors by the portables.  They will open at 8 am.  If you are a walker please do not arrive early as you will not be let in.  Students on busses will have a staggered entry into the school.
  • Students/staff will use the center staircase for going up and the side staircases for doing down.
  • Students and staff must wear masks unless they have a doctor's note
  • Students must remain in their classrooms/cohorts for the full day.  They will have scheduled breaks and there will be a hall pass for emergency use.
  • Students will have to bring their lunch and eat it in their classrooms.  They are not allowed to leave the school.
  • Accommodations for IEP students will still continue however some modifications will have to be made regarding access to the resource room due to safety requirements

As you prepare for the first day of school, here are some important things you'll need to know.

Secondary school start date

If you are returning to in-school learning in September, you will begin with a staggered start based on your grade. Start dates are as follows:

  • Grade 9 students will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2020
  • Grade 10 students will join Grade 9 students in attending on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2020
  • All secondary students will attend Thursday, Sept.10, 2020

A staggered start allows for the gradual return of students, and time for learning and adopting new routines and safety practices. The staggered start also provides our Grade 9 students with a day for orientation, followed by a gradual increase to the school population.

If you are in a county class program (social skills, developmental skills, life skills and autism spectrum disorder) you will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 8, and will attend every day.

Secondary school schedule

Your semester one timetable will be based on a quadmester. This means you will take two subjects from September to November and two subjects from November to February, focusing on one subject per week. This alternating schedule limits the number of students in your cohort, and it reduces the number of students you come into contact with each week.

Your daily schedule will look like this:

Student timetable

You may access your timetable by logging into the student portal. The link to the student portal can be found under the student tab on our school website here: https://www.scdsb.on.ca/secondary/planning_for_high_school/student_portal.

Guidance staff are available beginning Aug. 31 to address timetable questions.

Health and safety

You will be required to wear a face mask while inside the school building. Please wear your own mask that firmly and completely covers your nose and mouth. We will provide cloth masks to students who do not have them.

Each morning, you are required to complete a self-screen prior to attending school. The self-screening tool can be found here: https://covid-19.ontario.ca/self-assessment/.

If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, you must stay home. You will be required to report your absence by contacting school office staff.

Lunch

You will be required to remain with your cohort during the lunch period. To begin the school year, lunch will take place in your classroom and, when possible, may take place outdoors. You will not be able to leave the school property, so please remember to pack a lunch and bring a refillable water bottle.

Lockers

Lockers will not be available at the beginning of the school year. You will be required to bring your books, lunch and personal belongings to class with you.

Remote learning

If you are participating in the remote learning program, you will be contacted by your teacher in the first two weeks of school and classes will begin on Monday, Sept. 21.

Sincerely,

Liselle Pricket
